Im Sommer 2021 zeigt das Museum Folkwang in Essen das Werk von Tobias Zielony in einer gro?en ?berblicksausstellung. Zu sehen sind Fotografien und Videoarbeiten aus den vergangenen 20 Jahren. Eine wesentliche Thematik in Zielonys k?nstlerischem Werk ist die Jugendkultur und ihr Bezug zu Herkunft, Repr?sentation und Mode sowie die damit einhergehende Definition von Identit?t in einer sich ver?ndernden medialen Wirklichkeit. Die digitale Kultur hat zu neuen Kommunikationsformen fotografischer Bilder gef?hrt, die die Idee des Selbst und der (Selbst-)Repr?sentation grundlegend ver?ndert haben. In den Arbeiten von Tobias Zielony zeigen sich die Abgebildeten als selbstbewusst Teilnehmende in diesem Wechselspiel - die trotz kultureller und sozialer Unterschiede in einem globalen Austausch sozialer Codes und Selbstbildnisse agieren.
Als Verlag hat Spector Books die Arbeit von Tobias Zielony von Beginn an begleitet. 2008 ver?ffentlichten wir die Publikation Trona, die inzwischen in der dritten Auflage ist. Es folgten die B?nde Manitoba (2011), Jenny Jenny (2013), Vele (2014). Diese enge und kontinuierliche gemeinsame Arbeit hat zu einer besonderen Idee f?r den Katalog der Essener Ausstellung gef?hrt. Er erscheint als eine Serie von sechs kleinen B?nden, die jeweils zwei bis vier Arbeiten komplett zeigen und von einem Text begleitet werden, der in essayistischer oder fiktionaler Form ein Gegen?ber f?r diese Bilder schafft. Gewonnen wurden daf?r sechs Protagonist*innen der j?ngsten literarischen Generation: Sophia Eisenhut, Joshua Gross, Dora Koderhold, Enis Maci, Mazlum Nergiz und Jakob Nolte.
1973 in Wuppertal geboren, studierte Tobias Zielony Dokumentarfotografie in Newport und Leipzig. 2015 nahm der K?nstler mit seiner Arbeit The Citizen an einer Gruppenausstellung f?r den Deutschen Pavillon auf der 56. Biennale in Venedig teil. Er hatte Gruppenausstellungen u.a. im Bozar Center for Fine Arts, Br?ssel (2015) und der 2. Montevideo Biennale (2014) sowie Einzelausstellungen im Philadelphia Museum of Art (2011) und der Berlinischen Galerie (2013).

In summer 2021, the Museum Folkwang in Essen will be showing the work of Tobias Zielony in a large survey exhibition, featuring photographs and video works from the last twenty years. One of the key themes in Zielony's artistic work is youth culture, its relationship to background, status, and fashion, and the definition of identity associated with this in a realm where the realities of the medium are shifting. Digital culture has revolutionized the ways in which photographic images can communicate, fundamentally altering the idea of the self and self-representation. In Zielony's works, the subjects of his pictures appear as self-aware participants in this process of interaction-engaging in a global exchange of social codes and self-images, irrespective of the cultural and social differences between the people involved. Spector Books has consistently supported Zielony's work from the start of his career. In 2008 we published Trona, now in its third edition, followed by Manitoba (2011), Jenny Jenny (2013), and Vele (2014). This sus- tained process of close collaboration has given rise to an unusual idea for the catalogue for the Essen exhibition. It is to be published as a series of six small volumes, each showing two to four works in full and accompanied by a text that creates a counterpoint to these works in the form of an essay or piece of fiction. Six protagonists of the new literary generation-Sophia Eisenhut, Joshua Gross, Dora Koderhold, Enis Maci, Mazlum Nergiz, and Jakob Nolte-have agreed to take part in this project.
Born in 1973 in Wuppertal, Germany, Tobias Zielony studied Documentary Photography in Newport and Leipzig.
