Ten years after the creation of the first of Babbage's Difference Engines, the financier of the project has been found dead while working in his study. It is up to private investigator Mark Dampfwerk to track down the killer in a Victorian London forever changed by the advent of steam based computing. This is a work of alternate history, exploring a timeline where computation technology became wide spread nearly a century early. This is brought about by the building of the Difference Engine, a device that was theorized about by Charles Babbage, but was only ever a flight of fancy.
