John of the Cross was a poet, mystic, theologian, spiritual director, administrator, and collaborator with Teresa of Avila in the reform of the Carmelites. Pope Pius XI proclaimed John a Doctor of the Church. Out of his own "dark night of the soul," John burned with the living flame of God's love and shared it with all of his sisters and brothers.
