An octogenarian game-keeper tells us the story of his sixty-eight years on the same Herefordshire estate. He can remember the time when wooden clogs were worn, and when young women gave birth in the fields while gathering stones for a shilling a ton. Although a traditionalist, he doesn't pretend that life was always easy, and he is sometimes sharply critical of former masters. From this truthful account, we get an unsentimental yet affectionate picture of life on a semi-feudal estate.
