A sketch of literary conditions and of the relations with the public of literary producers, from the earliest time to the fall of the Roman Empire. The author has attempted to present a sketch of the beginnings of literary property, that is, to outline the gradual evolution of the idea that the producer of a literary work, the poet, the maker, is entitled to secure from the public the fame associated with the work, and also some material compensation.
