Under the darkness of Black Sky, Public Enemy return to shed light: After a five-year hiatus, Chuck D & Flavor Flav reappear on the scene with a new album, garnishing their always insightful commentary on the times with gruff and varied beats. From the opening diagnosis in "Siick" to the madness of school shootings, thematized in "March Madness", the red, black and green machine is back to clean up the scene.
Public Enemy first appeared in Long Island, New York in 1982 and officially formed in 1985. Core members Chuck D and Flavor Flav are known for their socially critical and often militant-sounding lyrics, combined with a loud, sample-heavy sound and hard beats. In their sometimes radical political lyrics, they often deal with the discrimination of the black population in the USA. The band initially made a name for themselves as support for their early label mates Beastie Boys.
Their breakthrough came immediately after the release of their debut LP "Yo! Bum Rush The Show". The album achieved platinum status, as did its two successors "It Takes A Nation Of Millions to Hold Us Back" (1988) and "Fear Of A Black Planet" (1990), which made Public Enemy one of the most successful bands of their time. Because of their musical toughness and their collaboration with trash metal band Anthrax ("Bring The Noise"), they were also able to inspire alternative rock and unite fans of different genres. They are considered one of the most influential, controversial and radical bands of their time and made the leap from underground hip-hop to alternative to mainstream in the 90s. In 2025, they are touring together with Guns'n' Roses. "Bring The Noise!" - They'll still be kicking ass in 2025!
