We are particularly interested in the way in which fungal pathogens evolve and acquire virulence for resistance genes in their hosts.I have focused during the last ten years on improving monitoring of pathogens, to collect standardized and comprehensive data, with establishment of Early Warning Systems. Committing to long-term data recording and better linkage between databases, including those for genetic characterization, with faster exchange and use of epidemiological and other information between the country and other regions. Furthermore, I have covered fundamental ecology and evolutionary relationship among fungi and plant in a complex pathosystem. These have lead to a general understanding of factors affecting the distribution, abundance and biodiversity of species. As a consequence, he has developed molecular markers for determining the pathogen genetic diversity.
