This book presents original papers by French, German, Italian, Belgian, Austrian, and American historians, political scientists and specialists in international relations as well as by distinguished members of the Quai d'Orsay and the Minist?re de la D?fense. It discusses American plans for Europe after the Second World War and European reactions to them. It stresses the importance of a permanent Euro-American rivalry in partnership, especially in the fields of economy and defence; but it maintains that the Euro-American partnership is necessary until such time as the European Union is able to determine its own future.
