Nine-time Grammy-winning trumpeter and bandleader Herb Alpert is releasing his 51st album, a holiday collection titled Christmas Time Is Here. This marks his third holiday album, following the success of his 1968 classic Christmas Album and 2017's The Christmas Wish. The new album features twelve tracks, ranging from Vince Guaraldi's title theme from A Charlie Brown Christmas to modern hits like Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You."
On "My Favorite Things," Alpert reworks the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein song, shifting its original 3/4 time signature to a 4/4 rhythm. This change gives the melody a new, sashaying energy, anchored by an infectious bassline. Alpert explains that this new approach "feels very original and fun to listen to." His trumpet states the tune in a radiant, unpretentious voice, making the piece linger long after it ends.
The album's centerpiece, "Christmas Time Is Here," captures the holiday's more reflective side. Alpert renders the Vince Guaraldi tune with a signature warmth—his trumpet tone is bright and golden, yet intimate, like light on a winter evening. The rest of the album shifts in mood from track to track, showcasing Alpert’s versatility. "Feliz Navidad" is transformed into a mellow, reflective tune, while "Santa Baby" becomes a sultry and playful take with finger snaps and a walking bassline. "White Christmas" is relaxed and breezy, and "Winter Wonderland" swings with a mellow authority. Even familiar carols like "Sleigh Ride" and "The Christmas Song" are reframed, with the former becoming tranquil and spacious and the latter turning into an unexpectedly lively ballad. The album closes with Frank Loesser’s "What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?," a romantic and wistful farewell.
With Christmas Time Is Here, Alpert continues a holiday tradition he began decades ago. His 1968 Christmas Album topped the Billboard chart for three consecutive years, with his version of "The Christmas Song" becoming a perennial favorite. Similarly, 2017's The Christmas Wish achieved widespread success, reaching No. 1 on multiple charts. This new collection takes a more intimate and groove-driven approach, guided by Alpert’s instinct. He hopes the music will connect with listeners and "makes them feel good," continuing his legacy of bringing invention and generosity to the holiday songbook. As Alpert says, "My own style is not something that I think about... It’s just how I play."
